Stephen Tarr, Apprentice Technician - Arnold Clark

Tuesday, 6th March 2018

18-year-old Stephen Tarr joined Harry Fairbairn BMW Inverness as an Apprentice Technician in September 2017.

Stephen learned the ropes while he was still at school, enjoying work experience and getting to know the team and their working practices before applying for an apprenticeship. Today, Stephen works under the support of a dedicated mentor, who oversees tasks including vehicle maintenance, MOT preparation, removal, replacement and overhaul of major components and electrical fault diagnostics.

Stephen finds the tasks he is given provide him with the responsibility to work independently yet always with the support of his mentor – who he enjoys learning from.

Training is a big part of Stephen’s apprenticeship, and he’ll spend up to eight weeks a year at Arnold Clark’s GTG Training Centre in Edinburgh to learn all the technical aspects of the role before putting them into practice back in Inverness.

Stephen is quick to recommend an apprenticeship to anyone considering this career path, commenting: “If you are given the opportunity and it is something you want to do, you need to grab it with both hands and give it 100% as it’s a great career with a very, very bright future.”

Arnold Clark offers a number of different apprenticeships in Inverness, including Technician roles, Body Repair, Spray Painting and Vehicle Parts. Applications are open until 9th March.
